Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a type of physical therapy that helps improve the function of the muscles in your face, mouth, lips, tongue, and neck.

OMT can help with:

  • Breathing: Improving nasal breathing and lip seal

  • Swallowing: Improving swallowing skills

  • Speech: Improving speech and articulation

  • Sleep: Improving sleep quality

  • Facial posture: Improving facial symmetry and oral rest posture

  • Chewing: Improving chewing skills

  • Tongue position: Improving tongue position

OMT can help with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), which can affect people of all ages. OMDs can be caused by abnormal muscle patterns that develop over time. Some common OMDs include: Tongue thrust when swallowing, Tongue ties or lip ties, Lips resting apart, and Thumb-sucking or nail-biting.

OMT can include facial exercises, behavior modification techniques, and creating a lips-together mouth posture. Treatment is customized based on your age and symptoms.
